Purpose / Scientific Focus

Soil Moisture & Water Storage •  Boreal Hydrology  •  Groundwater - Surface Water Interactions

The Hannin Creek Education and Applied Research Centre (HCEARC) is a boreal forest research and monitoring site associated with the Global Institute for Water Security (GIWS). The site supports research into how water moves through and is stored within boreal landscapes, using long-term measurements of precipitation, meteorological conditions, soil moisture, soil-water storage, and groundwater levels to investigate interactions between the atmosphere, soil, and subsurface. These observations provide valuable data for understanding groundwater recharge, water-storage dynamics, and watershed processes, while also supporting hydrological modelling, water-security research, and field-based student training.
