Buffalo Pound Lake
Purpose / Scientific Focus
Water Quality • Drinking-Water Security • Aquatic Ecosystem Change • Lake Mixing and Stratification
The Buffalo Pound Lake site, affiliated with the Global Institute for Water Security (GIWS), is focused on lake eutrophication, harmful algal blooms, water quality, and drinking-water security. Continuous buoy observations are used to understand how changing inflows, stratification, and biogeochemical processes influence lake conditions and bloom development, while real-time data are also integrated into decision-support tools that help water treatment plant operators anticipate and manage conditions that could disrupt treatment. The site also supports remote-sensing validation and broader cross-lake research collaborations, making it an important example of how long-term environmental monitoring can directly support drinking-water management and climate resilience.
