St. Denis National Wildlife Area (SDNWA)
Purpose / Scientific Focus
Groundwater • Wetland Hydrology • Soil Moisture • Agricultural Landscapes
The St. Denis National Wildlife Area (SDNWA), is one of Canada's longest-running and most extensively studied prairie hydrology observatories. Established in 1968, the site provides long-term observations of wetlands, groundwater, soil moisture, snow, and agricultural landscapes within the Prairie Pothole Region
The site is a cornerstone for research on prairie wetland hydrology, groundwater–surface water interactions, and climate impacts on agricultural landscapes. Its long-term datasets support studies of water balance, soil moisture, snow processes, wetland ecology, and climate change, making it a critical resource for advancing water management and agricultural resilience across Saskatchewan.
