Established through natural regeneration following a forest fire, this site is dominated by jack pine with a ground layer of reindeer lichen with isolated groups of green alder, and feathermoss. The relatively flat, moderately to well-drained landscape and groundwater table located several metres below the surface make Old Jack Pine (OJP) an important site for long-term research on boreal forest ecology, carbon cycling, hydrology, and ecosystem responses to climate change.

Boreal Ecosystem Research and Monitoring Sites

OJP is one of the three active monitoring sites in the Global Institute for Water Security (GIWS) BERMS program, a long-term research network that investigates interactions among climate, hydrology, and vegetation across representative boreal ecosystems. The active sites include Old Black Spruce, Old Jack Pine, and Fen.
